Turn up the volume: The latest in hearing aids

CBS Sunday Morning 20 339 subscribers

Two out of three people over age 70 have trouble hearing, but only about 20% of adults who have hearing loss actually use a hearing aid, for the most part because of costs related to the devices themselves and to testing and consultations with a doctor or audiologist. David Pogue checks out the latest advances in hearing aid technology that have reduced size and added unique features, and finds out what changes consumers can anticipate after Congress passed a bill allowing hearing aids to be sold over-the-counter. • I've had three sets of hearing aids... They are a rip off... There is no expensive dr. visits necessary... Training to "fit/tune" hearing aids can be done in an atternoon and the equipment is not expensive. I've bought my own hardware to tune Resound, my own software and all the hipe is BS. It's all hype. You can get hearing aids from CostCo for about 2 grand.... that's also a rip but is less of a rip.

  • Hearing aids don't perform in noisy environments. I have my audiologist take all the bells and whistles out and give raw horsepower. And it isn't just an age thing. Those that served were exposed to blast overpressure and muzzle noise.

  • An area that I wished this interview would have touched on is how these devices help those with Tinnitus. I wrote a book on it. There are options instead of suffering in silence.

  • Thank you for this video. Dementia seems to be affecting my father after having lost his hearing aids. We welcome more affordable hearing aids and much needed competition in this field.

  • I have starkey hearing aids and they do not filter out background noise. They are not the best even my doctor said that. I could be in a crowd and I can hardly hear the people next to me because my hearing aids don’t filter the noises. When I’m not in crowded places it’s fine but I think starkey should figure out better technology for filtering noise.

  • I have been wearing one since i was 5 yrs old. My dad shell out money to make sure i could hear. Now at 53 i can not afford one. I don't need all the bells & whistles. I just want to hear. I need a new one, but can not get any help. So when this one is dead. I will no longer be a part of the world!

  • No CC on a video about hearing loss and the ADA has been in effect since the '90's. Pretty sad.

  • The prospect of inexpensive OTC hearing aids is blessing beyond measure for those suffer hearing loss. And I know Senator Elizabeth Warren (who I do not care for) deserves a fair amount of credit for this.

  • Cute how CBS News uploads a piece on hearing aids, but doesn't do so with closed captions.

  • I paid $5,000 for hearing aids that have directional microphones and can be controlled with my phone. They also have rechargeable batteries. My main problem was hearing in a noisy environment like a restaurant or a house party. I've had them for 3 years and have recently given up on them, as they are of no help in a relatively loud setting. It's also a total PITA to change the click domes, the part that goes into your ear, and wax guards.

  • Cost IS the problem... This industry has been in a monopoly by a handful of companies who have driven up the price while other technologies have decreased in price. The industry is ripe for destructive technology to step in.

  • Ironically, there were no closed captions on this video so I couldn't hear it very well.

  • Honestly CBS this i your personal YouTube channel and you don't post a video about hearing aids with captions? WTF are you all thinking? This is ridiculous. I know you had captions when you aired it on TV.. Someone needs to wake the F*** up.

  • You lost me at no closed captions.

  • I know this is a long shot on the discussion about hearing aids. What has happened to the technology of a hearing aid, when people are talking to that person with a foreign language to your native listening language. Is that being developed and or is it on the market now? I had read or seen in the past about 3 years ago on speech translation and understanding. Does anyone know?
